The Department of Pharmacognosy at Dr. Ithape Institute of D. Pharmacy focuses on the study of natural drugs derived from living organisms such as plants, microbes, and animals. With the growing renaissance of herbal medicine in India, pharmacognosy plays a crucial role in modern pharmaceutical sciences and drug discovery

From ancient traditional practices to modern research, natural products have always been a foundation for drug development, serving as model molecules for new medicines. Pharmacognosy bridges this heritage with modern science, making it one of the most popular and impactful fields in pharmacy education.

Academic Focus :

As part of the undergraduate curriculum, students gain comprehensive knowledge in:

Plant Anatomy & Physiology
Identification and Phytochemistry of medicinal and aromatic plants
Isolation and Estimation of therapeutically active phytoconstituents
Formulation and Standardization of herbal products
Recent Techniques for natural product research
Evaluation of Herbal Drugs
Regulatory and Commercial Aspects of herbal medicines in Indian and global markets

Academic Focus :

Students are trained to identify medicinal plants, extract active ingredients, and evaluate herbal drugs. They also learn about the basic requirements for establishing herbal drug industries and gain exposure to the commerce, trade, and regulations of plant-based pharmaceuticals.
